O Creator of the full moon and the morning sun,

My reliance in every state is upon You.

And every king is Your slave, and no

dominion remains to him, that he might be called a little king.

To join Jacob's son went a Sulayk—

a partridge chick, like ʿUmayr's son, in death.

And like Zuhayr's Warqaʾ, there passed away

a gray dove, soaring over blossoms amid thickets.

The soul has sought a refuge for itself,

So I said: “Wait; this is not up to you.”

Indeed, He who fashioned you decrees whatever

He wills, and it takes effect; so rebuke your two reproachers.

    وَالفَلَكُ الأَعظَمُ فيها فُلَيك

    The sea, in His power, is but a sip;

And the greatest celestial sphere, within it, is a tiny sphere.
