أَهاتِفَةَO calling bird الأَيكِthe grove خَلّيleave alone الأَنامَhumankind
وَلاand do not تَثلِبيهِrevile them وَلاand do not تَمدَحيpraise
O calling bird of the grove, leave humankind alone.
O nightly caller, leave people be
And neither revile them nor praise them.
Do not blame them nor praise them
وَإِنand if كُنتِyou are شادِيَةًsinging فَاِصمُتيthen be silent
وَإِنand if كُنتِyou are باكِيَةٍweeping فَاِصدَحيthen raise your voice
And if you are singing, be silent;
And if you are happy, stay silent
And if you are weeping, raise your voice.
And if you are sad, cry out loud
كَدَحناwe have toiled لِفانِيَةٍfor a fleeting world حُلوَةٍsweet
فَكَيفَso how نَلومُكَwe blame you إِنif تَكدَحيyou toil
We have toiled for a sweet, fleeting world;
We have toiled for fleeting sweetness
So how can we blame you if you toil?
How could we blame you if you toil too
وَإِنand if حَمَلَتhas carried راحَتيmy palm راحَهاits wine
بِأَقداحِهاin its goblets لَمdid not تَفُزwin أَقدُحيmy lot-casting arrows
And even if my palm has carried its wine
If you carried my comfort, carried it away
In its goblets, my lot-casting arrows have not won.
With your cups, no cups could outpour it
وَماand what يُضحِكُmakes laugh السِنَّthe teeth فيin دَهرِهاits time
كَأَنَّas though المَصائِبَcalamities لَمdid not تَفدَحِweigh heavily
And what makes the teeth laugh in its time,
What makes this age laugh in its course
As though calamities had not weighed heavily?
As if disasters never spread wide
