ياO بَدَويَّBedouin اِتَّقِshun المُدامَةَwine إِنَّfor الthe
يا بَدَويَّ اِتَّقِ المُدامَةَ إِنَّ ال
خَمرَwine باتَتhas become كَثيرَةَrife with الأُبَنِfaults
خَمرَ باتَت كَثيرَةَ الأُبَنِ
O Bedouin, shun wine, for the
O bedouin, beware of drunkenness, for wine
wine has become rife with faults.
Has become abundant in evils
آلَيتُI swear ماnot سَمَّحَتmade generous أَخاa man of بَخلٍstinginess
آلَيتُ ما سَمَّحَت أَخا بَخلٍ
يَوماًon any day وَلاnor شَجَّعَتmade brave أَخاa man of جُبُنِcowardice
يَوماً وَلا شَجَّعَت أَخا جُبُنِ
I swear it has not made a miser generous
I blame not a stingy brother
on any day, nor made a coward brave.
Nor a cowardly brother on a day of valor
وَإِنَّماand only تِلكَthat خِفَّةٌlight-headedness حَدَثَتarose
وَإِنَّما تِلكَ خِفَّةٌ حَدَثَت
عَنهاfrom it فَجاءَتso it came بِأَثقَلِwith the heaviest الغَبَنِloss
عَنها فَجاءَت بِأَثقَلِ الغَبَنِ
And that is merely light-headedness that arose
Rather that is but a minor slip
from it, and so brought the heaviest loss.
That resulted in the worst loss
أَفضَلُbetter مِنthan أَحمَرِred السُلافِchoice wine وَمِنand than
أَفضَلُ مِن أَحمَرِ السُلافِ وَمِن
كُمَيتِهاits dark-red variety ناصِعٌpure white مِنَof اللَبَنِmilk
كُمَيتِها ناصِعٌ مِنَ اللَبَنِ
Better than choice red wine, and than
Better than red wine and the jug
its dark-red variety, is pure white milk.
Of it is what is pure white of milk
