My mount is time, which I did not mount

of my own will; rather, the Supreme Guardian made me ride.

No one can give to me when God withholds from me,

nor deprive me of anything if He gives to me.

They are the two youths, reigning in alternation,

and they have no understanding—how, then, can they be unjust?

When they have gone, they do not return; they are followed by

two counterparts who withhold what is entrusted to them.

Every rich man they strip of his wealth,

and every armored warrior they bring down from his steed.

How often they have alighted in a pathless waste and departed

without a sound, from mountains and lowlands.

They have never borne two saddles, to be heard

creaking when haste impels the saddles onward.

They whittle away bone and flesh as it dissolves,

to extract its marrow, and they rend the skin.

They have strutted as two camel stallions; were there lifted from them

a veil, they would bellow in menace.

They never cease—though silence is a trait of them both—

to recount a lesson among us, or inscribe one.

They have drawn two swords among every people,

slitting lengthwise whatever they aim at, or severing it across.

Surely someone other than you is fitter for fodder than to be seen

with two upper-ear ornaments and two earlobe pendants in his ears.

You want an enduring stay and joy

in a house of cares, never a home for permanent dwellers.

    فَما بالُهُ لَمّا تَظاهَرَ شَرطانِ

    A single stipulation has always invalidated a sale;

what of it, then, when two stipulations join forces?

Umm Dafr has indeed deceived me, and has become

    bolstered by Umm Layla's power.

If this one takes a share of reason,

that one has two shares in a man's delusion.

Some people's claims cast doubt upon them,

and the rain of reason missed me and passed me by.

Have you not seen Aʿshā of Hawdha, stirred to claim

a demon's help when he speaks?

Lofty glory is intended for us, so we claim,

yet we choose to linger in unwholesome lands.

As though we were great water-buckets forced to rise,

hauled to the wellheads by ropes.

    لَها مَولِدُ الإِنسانِ وَالمَوتُ شَطّانِ

    Life is nothing but a sea of engulfing depths;

human birth and death are its two shores.

How lovely, then, is your unkind world, when she appears

wearing a sash of stars and two necklaces!

How many a man of ample watering grounds has a fearful soul,

and many a broad-hearted man is used to cramped watering grounds.

Who will grant me dark sandgrouse beside dusky ones in a wilderness,

as though the two were two tribes of Jacob's house?

There the two cloaks of Yemeni cloth are trailed:

two cloaks on each bird with dust-gray nesting scrapes.

You would take a viper's trail there for a fallen piece

of a whip; and its two eyes in the gloom are two sparks.

When the thread of dawn clears, there come into view

ridges of sand with tawny gazelles and flocks of ostriches.
