My Lord has taken pity on me—so why do I linger

    At those dwellings and tethering-stakes?

Indeed, around that dwelling, ruin befell

Its people's herd of beauties through sudden calamities.

    بُطونُ بَناتِهِ مِنها عَواري

    A young man's borrowed possessions follow one another;

His daughters' bellies are empty of them.

So keep your two eyes from gazing at beautiful women,

And honor your two female neighbors by avoiding conversation.

If the wall is low, do not peer over it

To see what is concealed next door.

I have found the knives of misfortune falling

Upon the throats of the tooth-worn camel and the calf.

And let no fragrance beside Rayya delight you,

    Nor radiance appearing from Nawwar.

And turn away from the house's vicinity, above which

Young women look out in finery at evening.

Peer furtively in your drunken excitement

    At another's anklet and bracelet.

Women visiting at dusk, and beer-drinking,

    Increase your losses and reproaches.

Hold fast to reason, and do what it deems

Good—for it is the gatherer of honey.

And do not accept a ruling from the Torah,

For truth lies hidden away from it.

I see that its books, for the Jews, have become

Reed mats, already counted among ruined things.

If you are inwardly sincere toward the Creator,

Then ravening beasts will not be among those that harm you.

And if the herd of wild cows passes, do not turn

Along the breeze's path toward the musk pouch.

So a sparking firestick of yours is like one that fails,

    Whenever rending vicissitudes descend.

Is the flock around Duwar made up of women

At Mecca, or maidens of Duwar?
