May rain bless an ugly woman who never contemplated indecency.

She goes in the morning to spin, knowing nothing of flirtation.

And she knows no lute except the shaft of her spindle.

Nor does she rejoice when aged wine is tapped.

All creation complains; if Saturn rose

To al-Simāk, he would find him lamenting his lack of arms.

Indeed the raven—though no footed creature has been found

Sounder than it—has a leg that suffers lameness.

So shun pride in this world; for if they grew proud—

The radiant clouds—the rain would be blamed when it fell.

If a line of verse grew proud, though belonging

To poetry’s kāmil ('complete') meter, it would meet elision or suffer contraction.

So marvel at the beauties’ lute: it never feared old age,

Nor does time see it emaciated on journeys through the night.

    فَقيلَ أَسُدسَ في حَولٍ وَما بُزِلا

    Still in a young camel’s guise, its nature has not changed;

So it was said to reach the six-tooth stage within a year, yet never cut its fangs.

People blamed one another, and their conjectures took diverse forms.

And the young seeker became a Murji’ite or a Mu‘tazilite.

And it was said: 'No resurrection for reward is to be hoped for'; and what

You heard about that is a false claimant’s jesting assertion.

And how can a body be summoned to a life of ease

After it has rotted in the dusty earth or suffered hardship?

And can there rise from a grave, to bear the burden,

A back whose least affliction was to be split apart?

I reckon the planet Mars, or Saturn,

Nothing but two princes who, if time runs long, will be deposed.
