Long have I been bound and released in life.

Whoever fears God is safe and free from sorrow.

O owner of the sheep, yield their destroyer his due.

And do not say my human self is lost through my surrender to ruin.

Be mindful of your God in hardship and in ease.

And abandon your disputing over resurrection and the sending of messengers.

How many a dusty-white nursing ewe your cook has slain,

And many a two-colored one has become a sluggard's food.

Yet you begrudged a ewe—just a single one—

To a lean-hipped, loping wolf bereft of food.

You begrudged his cub nourishment from her blood,

While you drink a smooth, pleasant-tasting draught.

And ask a tribe of Adnan or Saba about him:

You will find that, when his provisions run out, he is no beggar.
