قَدalready حُجِبَhas been veiled النورُthe light وَالضِياءُand the radiance
قَد حُجِبَ النورُ وَالضِياءُ
وَإِنَّماand only دينُناour religion رِياءُostentation
وَإِنَّما دينُنا رِياءُ
Light and radiance have been veiled,
The light and radiance are veiled,
and our religion is nothing but ostentation.
And our religion is but ostentation.
وَهَلand does ...? يَجودُwaters generously الحَياthe rain أُناساًpeople
وَهَل يَجودُ الحَيا أُناساً
مُنطَوِياًwithdrawn عَنهُمُfrom them الحَياءُmodesty
مُنطَوِياً عَنهُمُ الحَياءُ
And does the rain fall generously upon people
Can the serpent be generous to people,
while modesty has withdrawn from them?
When shyness is hidden from them?
ياO عالمَworld السَوءِof evil ماnot عَلِمناwe have known
يا عالمَ السَوءِ ما عَلِمنا
أَنَthat مُصَلّيكَyour worshippers أَتقِياءُpious
أَنَ مُصَلّيكَ أَتقِياءُ
O world of evil, we have not known
O evil world, we did not know
your worshippers to be pious.
That your prayers are by the pious.
لاlet ... not يَكذِبَنَّlie (emphatic) اِمرُؤٌa man جَهولٌdeeply ignorant
لا يَكذِبَنَّ اِمرُؤٌ جَهولٌ
ماnot فيكَin you لِلَّهِof God أَولِياءُfriends
ما فيكَ لِلَّهِ أَولِياءُ
Let no ignorant man lie:
No ignorant man will lie,
there are no friends of God in you.
In you, there are no loyalists for God.
وَياand O بِلاداًlands مَشىwalked عَليهاupon them
وَيا بِلاداً مَشى عَليها
أُولواthose possessing اِفتِقارٍpoverty وَأَغنِياءُand wealthy people
أُولوا اِفتِقارٍ وَأَغنِياءُ
And O lands upon which walked
And O lands, walked upon
the needy and the wealthy:
By the deprived and the wealthy.
إِذاwhen قَضىdecreed اللَهُGod بِالمَخازِيwith shameful deeds
إِذا قَضى اللَهُ بِالمَخازِي
فَكُلُّthen all أَهليكِyour inhabitants أَشقِياءُwretched
فَكُلُّ أَهليكِ أَشقِياءُ
when God decrees disgrace,
When God decrees adversities,
then all your inhabitants are wretched.
All your people are miserable.
كَمhow often وَعَظَadmonished الواعِظونَthe preachers مِنّاamong us
كَم وَعَظَ الواعِظونَ مِنّا
وَقامَand arose فيon الأَرضِthe earth أَنبِياءُprophets
وَقامَ في الأَرضِ أَنبِياءُ
How often the preachers among us have preached,
How many preachers preached to us,
and prophets have arisen on earth!
And prophets stood upon the earth.
فَاِنصَرَفواthen they departed وَالبَلاءُand affliction باقٍremaining
فَاِنصَرَفوا وَالبَلاءُ باقٍ
وَلَمand not يَزُلcease داؤُكِyour disease العَياءُincurable
وَلَم يَزُل داؤُكِ العَياءُ
Then they departed, while affliction remains,
Yet they left while affliction remains,
and your incurable disease has not gone away.
And your illness of arrogance continues.
حُكمٌa decree جَرىtook effect لِلمَليكِof the Sovereign فيناamong us
حُكمٌ جَرى لِلمَليكِ فينا
وَنَحنُand we فيin الأَصلِthe origin أَغبِياءُfools
وَنَحنُ في الأَصلِ أَغبِياءُ
A decree of the Sovereign has taken effect among us,
A ruling has befallen us from the king,
and we are fools by nature.
Though we were originally the foolish ones.
