لاdo not يُعجِبَنَّbe conceited الفَتىthe young man بِفَضلٍin merit
فَإِنَّهُfor he is مُقتَضىunder obligation بِوَعدِby a promise
Let no young man pride himself on merit,
The youth is not impressed by merit,
for he is bound by a promise.
For it is a promise of reward.

آلَthe house of سَعيدٍSaʿīd وَآلَand the house of سَعدِSaʿd
He says, “In lofty attainments I have surpassed
I say I have surpassed in glory,
the house of Saʿīd and the house of Saʿd.
The houses of Sa'id and Sa'ad.
فَلَيسَso there is none فَوقيabove me وَلَيسَand there is none مِثليlike me
وَلَيسَand there is none قَبليbefore me وَلَيسَand there is none بَعديafter me
So none is above me, and none is my equal,
So there is none above me, nor like me,
and none before me, and none after me.”
Neither before me, nor after me.

His father bestowed on him a contagion
His father endowed him with my enmity,
from his own death—and death is contagious.
With his death, as smallpox is contagious.
أَودىcarried off بِفُرسانِthe horsemen of كُلِّevery جيلٍgeneration

It has carried off the horsemen of every generation,
It destroyed the horsemen of every generation,
the straight-haired among them and the curly-haired.
Among the eminent and the curly-haired.
وَماand did not ثَنىprovide again الحادِثاتُthe vicissitudes مَعداًMaʿadd
مَنanyone مِثلَlike بِسطامَBisṭām وَاِبنَand the son of مَعديMaʿdī
Nor have the vicissitudes given Maʿadd again
And events have not bent a refuge,
anyone like Bisṭām and Ibn Maʿdī.
Like Bistaam and the son of Ma'adi.
ياO زَينَباًZaynab حُلِّيَتshe was adorned وَدَعداًand Daʿd
كَمhow many مَرَّpassed مِنof زَينَبٍZaynab وَدَعدِand Daʿd
O adorned Zaynab, and Daʿd,
O Zainab adorned and O Da'ad,
how many Zaynabs and Daʿds have passed away!
How many a Zainab and Da'ad have passed.
فَالحَمدُso praise لِلَّهِto God قَلَّhas dwindled خَيريmy good
وَصارَand has become قُربيmy nearness نَظيرَthe equal of بُعديmy remoteness
So praise be to God: my good has dwindled,
So praise be to God, my goodness has diminished,
and my nearness has become like my remoteness.
And my kin have become like strangers to me.

بارِقَةٌa lightning-flash آذَنَتgave notice بِرَعدِof thunder
And from death there has appeared to me
And death has appeared to me,
a flash of lightning that heralded thunder.
Lightening that heralds thunder.
