Leave off, and let the fates pursue their own course.
Leave destiny to take its course,
For neither Damascus nor Egypt protected kingship.
Neither Damascus nor Egypt could protect a kingdom,
وَلاnor الحَرَّةُthe lava field السَوداءُthe black حاطَتsafeguarded سِيادَةًsovereignty

Nor did the black lava field safeguard sovereignty,
Neither black Harrat nor white Basra fortified by walls,
nor did the white stones fortify white Basra.
You try to predict events in vain,
تَرومُyou seek قِياساًanalogy لِلحَوادِثِfor events ضِلَّةًin error
وَتِلكَand those أُصولٌprinciples لَيسَdoes not يَجمَعُهاencompass them حَصرُenumeration
You seek, in error, to reason about events by analogy,
These are principles that cannot be comprehended,
and those are principles no enumeration can encompass.
At dawn's light the noon prayer,
وَعِندَand at ضِياءِlight الفَجرِdawn صُلِّيَتِwas offered الضُحىthe forenoon prayer
وَعِندَand at غُروبِsetting الشَمسِthe sun صُلِّيَتِwas offered العَصرُthe afternoon prayer
And at dawn's light the forenoon prayer was offered,
At sunset's fall the afternoon prayer,
and at sunset the afternoon prayer was offered.
Shortening prayers is not proper everywhere,
وَماand not يَجمُلُis fitting التَقصيرُshortening فيin كُلِّevery مَوطِنٍcircumstance
وَلاand not كُلُّevery مَفروضِobligatory act الصَلاةِof prayer لَهُfor it قَصرُshortening
And shortening is not fitting in every circumstance,
Nor are all obligatory prayers to be shortened,
nor does every obligatory prayer admit shortening.
If death is inevitable, meet it,

If death cannot be avoided, then meet it,
Whether it comes by being slit at the throat or waist,
whether both temples are shattered by it or the flank is slit open.

Ali passed away after victory and glory,
And Hamza before victory could come,
and Hamza perished before victory was sent down.

And I see that the offspring of the elder Adam
Long ago ordained by fate to fall.
long ago had a binding covenant of death laid upon them.
