Keep away from people, and you will cast off the burden of their companionship.

And do not desire helpers and supporters for yourself.

Nor seek help from people who, when befriended,

sharpen their ears and eyes to spite you.

When I discerned time's long span, long upon it dwelt

my thought, instilling restraint in this soul.

Alas, how many cities of kings have become wastelands

in its course, and how many wildernesses have become cities!

And God is greater: no analogy comes near Him,

nor can 'was' or 'became' apply to Him.

I have no kingdom, yet I see the world besieging me,

and I have not made the pilgrimage, yet I have encountered hindrance.
