كَأَنَّكَas though you are عَنheedless of كَيدِthe wiles الحَوادِثِcalamities راقِدُasleep
وَماand not أَمِنَتهُwere safe from it فيin السَماءِthe sky الفَراقِدُthe Farqad stars
It is as though you sleep, heedless of calamities’ wiles.
As if you are asleep, unaware of the tricks of fate,
Nor have the Farqad stars in the sky been safe from them.
Yet have no faith in the watchful stars.
سَيَجريwill pass عَلىover نيرانِthe fires فارِسَPersia طارِقٌa night visitor
فَتَخمُدُthen they will die out وَالمِرّيخُwhile Mars فيin العَينِthe eye راقِدُasleep
A night visitor will pass over the fires of Persia,
Soon a conqueror will march on Persia's fires
and they will die out, while Mars lies asleep before the eye.
And extinguish them, while Mars sleeps in the eye.
وَماand not اِبتَسَمَتsmiled أَيّامُهُhis days النُكدُwretched عَنout of رِضاًcontentment
وَلَكِنbut تَحاشىhe kept his distance وَالصُدورُwhile breasts حَواقِدُharboring grudges
And his wretched days did not smile out of contentment,
Never did his days smile with joy,
but he kept his distance, while breasts harbored grudges.
But rather he avoided, while breasts held grudges.
أَأُنفِقُshall I spend? مِنfrom نَفسيmyself عَلىon اللَهِGod زائِفاًcounterfeit coin
لِأَلحَقَso that I may join بِالأَبرارِwith the righteous وَاللَهُwhile God ناقِدُan assayer
Shall I spend counterfeit coin from myself on God,
Shall I spend my soul falsely for God
to join the righteous, when God is the assayer?
To join the righteous, while God judges?
وَشَخصيand my body وَرَوحيand my soul مِثلُlike طِفلٍa child وَأُمَّهُand his mother
لِتِلكَfor that one بِهَذاto this one مِنfrom يَدِthe hand الرَبِّthe Lord عاقِدُone who binds
And my body and my soul are like a child and his mother;
My person and my soul are like a child and mother
one from the Lord’s hand binds her to him.
For that one's hand binds them fast.
يَموتانِthey both die مِثلَlike الناظِرَينِthe two eyes تَوارُداًtogether
فَلاso not هُوَhe مَفقودٌmissed وَلاnor هِيَshe فاقِدُbereaved
They die together, like the two eyes,
They die together like two gazers meeting,
so he is not missed, nor is she bereaved.
So neither is lost nor the other bereft.
وَلَوand if قَبِلَتaccepted أَمرَthe command المَليكِthe Sovereign جُنوبُناour sides
لَماwould not قَبِلَتهاhave received them فيin الظَلامِthe darkness المَراقِدِthe resting places
And had our sides accepted the Sovereign’s command,
Had our hearts accepted the king's command,
the resting places would not have received them in the darkness.
They would not have accepted it in the dormant dark.
