كَأَنَّماas though الأَرضُthe earth شاعَspread فيهاthrough it
مِنfrom طيبِthe fragrance of أَزهارِهاits flowers بَخورُincense
It is as though through the earth there spread
The earth is as though into it
incense from the fragrance of its flowers.
Was diffused sweet scent from its flowers' incense.
أَثنَتpraised عَلىupon رَبِّهاtheir Lord السَواريnight-roaming clouds
وَالنَبتُand vegetation وَالماءُand water وَالصُخورُand rocks
The night-roaming clouds praised their Lord,
The trees, the herbage, and water and rocks
and the plants, the water, and the rocks.
Hymned their Lord in accord and shared the chorus.
وَنَحنُand we فَوقَupon التُرابِthe soil ثِقلٌa burden
يَكادُnearly مِنfrom تَحتِناbeneath us يَخورُgives way
And we, upon the soil, are a burden;
While we on the soil a burden are,
it nearly gives way beneath us.
And all but sink 'neath us the land.
لاdo not تَفتَخِرboast إِنَّindeed كُلَّall فَخرٍglory
لِلَّهِto God وَاِستَعجَمَand became speechless الفَخورُthe boaster
Do not boast: indeed, all glory
Do not boast; all boasting
belongs to God, and the boaster has fallen mute.
To God belongs: vainglory made the boaster hang his head in shame.
أَلاdo not تَرىyou see أَنَّthat أُمَّMother of دَفرٍStench
كَأَنَّهاas though she were آلُهاher mirage السَخورُmocking
Do you not see that Mother of Stench
See you not that the Mother of Ruin
is like her own mocking mirage?
Is like her gods were subdued?
