أَتِعارُis Tiʿār...? عَينُكَyour eye ياO بنَson of أَحمَرَAḥmar ضِلَّةًin delusion
وَيَسومُand Yasūm لَيسَis not بِبارِحٍdeparting at all وَتِعارُand Tiʿār
Is your eye Tiʿār, O Ibn Aḥmar, in delusion?
Does your eye shed tears, O son of the ruddy complexion,
And Yasūm is not departing, nor is Tiʿār.
Out of loss though it happened not yesterday nor sheds tears?

Before Bāhila, to whom are traced
For the sake of the simpleton to whom your ancestors
Your two forefathers, poems were composed about those two.
Recited poems that contained glories.
وَكَذاكَand such أَحكامُthe decrees of الزَمانِtime وَإِنَّماand it is only
ثَوبُthe garment of الحَياةِlife وَماand what يَضُمُّit enfolds مَعارُborrowed
And such are Time’s decrees; indeed,
Thus are the judgments of time, which
Life’s garment and all it enfolds are only borrowed.
Is but the life's garment that bears shame.
وَالدَهرُand time عارٍnaked لاnot يُغادِرُleaves behind مَلبَساًa garment
فَالمَجدُso glory مُندَرِسٌeffaced بِهِby it وَالعارُand disgrace
And Time is naked, leaving no garment;
Time is shameful and leaves no garment intact,
So glory is effaced by it, and disgrace as well.
So glory in it lies tattered while shame stays erect.
