أمِor الجوْزاءُal-Jawza (constellation) تحْتَbeneath يدِيmy hand وِسادُa pillow
Is a bed laid for me above the full moon,
My bed is placed higher than the full moon
Or is al-Jawza a pillow beneath my hand?
And the Pleiades are under my hand as a pillow
قَنِعْتُI was content فخِلْتُso I imagined أنّthat النجْمَthe stars دونيbelow me

I was content, and thought the stars beneath me;
I became content, so I neglected that the stars are beneath me
And contentment and striving are alike.
Contentment and struggle are equal
وأطْرَبَنيand stirred my longing الشّبابُyouth غَداةَthe morning ولّىit departed

And youth stirred my longing the morning it departed;
And youth delighted me one morning after it turned away
If only its years were a sound one could hear again!
I wish its years were a voice that could be brought back

Youth recovered after gray hair
And youth that is missed cannot be regained after white hair
Is no harder to find than a trustworthy companion.

It is as though I stand where rainclouds form beneath me;
It is as if wherever darkness gathers beneath me
So here I am, neither drizzled on nor drenched.
Slow down O critic behind me

Hold, you who howl behind me,
To inform me when inanimate objects spoke
So you may tell me when the inanimate ever spoke.
Foolishness protected people, patience is wisdom

Folly that keeps people away from you is wisdom;
And madness in which there is benefit, guidance
And error that brings benefit is right guidance.
Am I silent and eloquence is just my speech?

Am I obscure, when the word 'renown' describes me?
Am I content and contentment is my habit?
And poor, when contentment is my provision?
And I meet death before the mounts are exhausted

And meet death without the mounts having sped
By my needs and the horses have not tired
On my errands, or the steeds having galloped?
And if it was said "Ask for nobility," we would say

Were we told, 'Ask for honor,' we would say:
"May the prince live and we not be given more"
'May the prince live for us; let us be given nothing more.'
It complained, so I complained of the world and it extended

He ailed, and the world ailed; and swayed
With its inhabitants, the deep valleys and the open plains
The lowlands and highlands with their people.

And the lances trembled with panic and fear
As well the wailing women in mourning
At this, as did the sharp Indian-forged swords.

And how can a heart be still within its ribs,
When the countries trembled due to its illness?
When the lands have quaked at his illness?

He built a house from the substance of exalted glory,
As if the pillars for him were the Nayyirat
As though the heavenly lights were its pillars.

When the forenoon sun looks upon it,
It admitted that its own dress was mourning
She admits her robe is mourning garb.

But for God, people would say that they had become
With it, the seven planets became eight
Eight through him—the seven mighty heavens.

A radiant lord, begotten by radiant nobles of Ghassan,
The tribes of Iram and Aad submit to their glory
To whose might Iram and 'Ad submit.

Sons of Jafna's kings, brought close
To the Byzantines, obstinacy and stubbornness
To the Romans by obstinacy and defiance.

Quraysh sought to bring them to submission,
And leadership could not be attained from them
But their submission could not be won.
Their leaders choke the air with bellowing

O leader of steeds that choke the air with dust,
And above the ground are bodies without souls
And on the earth lies saffron-red dye of clotted blood.

Their necks have been bloodied by tall lances,
And exhaustion and contention dried it out
And prolonged exertion and pursuit have drained them.

Necklaced with the heads of enemies,
As if the pearls were adorned with locusts
As bashful maidens are necklaced with pearls.

Upon them ride men who don, for every battle,
Armors, the closing of whose eyes is sleep
Cloaks in which the wearer's sleep is wakefulness.
It tore them like the doors of wall-less enclosures

Like the doors of speckled snakes, torn apart,
And the locusts sewed them with their eyes
Then stitched by locusts with their eyes.

Traveling far and wandering became their custom
Travel abroad and distance bore them aloft.

And many a dawn from which we picked away the night,
As ashes are stripped off the fire
As ashes are picked away from a fire.

Darkness recovered in it from every illness,
And its planet that does not get restored is sick
Yet its star was sick, with none to visit it.
And if the dawn emerged, it would uncover him

And had morning risen, it would have been freed
From the darkness a mantle or shackles
From a shackle or fetter of darkness.

The sandgrouse seek refuge with us, begging
For the water whose abundance is guaranteed
For the water the waterskins hold.

They almost come to drink from the mounts' eyes—
The springs of their water eternally overflowing
Watering places whose water is always scant.
So how many distant lands did we pass

So how many distant lands they have crossed,
And our riding was all gentleness and calm
And all our speech was the camel-cries 'Hid!' and 'Had!'
And from thickets the wind veers about them

And thickets from which the wind turns aside,
Fearful the brambles would tear it apart
For fear the thorn-bushes might tear it apart.
And we would see the sparks of flint in them

And they would see the fire-stick's flame there,
But did not notice when the tinder ignited
Yet they saw nothing when the fire-sticks sparked.
If the whiteness of a person's eye were a dawn

If the white of a person's eye were dawn,
There the darkness would not be illuminated
The blackness would not be lit by it there.
And a land whose beasts of prey made me their guest

And many a land where I spent the night feeding beasts my provisions,
There I wish their prey would be provision for me
So that provisions might come back to me from them there.
So I would feed them to make them my food
فأُطْعِمُهاso I feed them لأجْعَلَهاto make them طَعاميmy food

So I feed them to make them my food;
And many a severed tie brings affection
And often affection has brought estrangement.
I left it while I was sleeping and visited a land
ترَكْتُI left بهاthere الرّقادَsleep وزُرْتُand visited أرضاًa land

يُحاذِرُfears أنto يُلِمّalight بهاthere الرّقادُsleep
I left slumber there and visited a land
Whose dwellers warn against the befalling of sleep
Where slumber fears to set foot.
I saw you angry when no forgiveness came
رأيْتُكَI saw you ساخِطاًresenting ماwhat جاءcame عَفواًwithout effort

ولوeven if جادَتْكَgave you generously بالذهَبِwith gold العِهادُthe recurring rains
I saw you scorn whatever came without effort,
Even if the necklaces of gold were gifted to you
Even if the recurring rains lavished gold upon you.
So you do not consider wealth other than money
فماso not تَعْتَدّyou count مالاًas wealth غيرَexcept مالٍwealth
حَبَاكَgifted you بهwith it طِعانٌlance-fighting أوor جِلادُsword-fighting
You count no wealth as wealth but the wealth
With which you were presented violently or bound
Bestowed on you by lance-fighting or swordplay.
And you spend every abundance you gained by force
وتُنْفِدُand you exhaust كلّevery وَفْرٍstore of wealth حُزْتَyou acquired قَسْراًby force
لعِلْمِكَbecause you know أنّthat آخِرَهُits end نَفادُexhaustion
And you spend all the wealth you seized by force,
For your knowledge that its end is exhaustion
Knowing that its end is exhaustion.
You were accustomed to war until some people said
ألِفْتَyou grew familiar with الحَرْبَwar حتىuntil قالsaid قَوْمٌsome people
أمَاis there no? لصَلاحِfor the harmony بينكُماbetween you two فسادُdiscord
You grew intimate with war, until some people said:
"Is there no peace between you two, but corruption?"
'Is there no discord to mar the harmony between you two?'
Armor dies before you, fate of the selfless
تموتُdies الدّرْعُthe coat of mail دونَكَin your stead حَتْفَthe death of أنْفٍthe nose (idiom: natural death)

ويَبْلىand wears out فوْقَupon عاتِقِكَyour shoulder النّجادُthe sword-baldric
The armor dies in your stead, a natural death,
And the coat of mail wears out upon your shoulder
And the baldric wears out upon your shoulder.
You rode the storms, so you are not raced
ركِبْتَyou rode العاصِفاتِthe storm-winds فماso not تُجارَىcan you be matched
وسُدْتَand you mastered العالَمِينَthe worlds فماso not تُسادُcan you be mastered
You rode the storm-winds, and none can keep pace with you;
And you blocked the two worlds, so you are not resisted
You mastered the worlds, and cannot be mastered.
Whenever I shoot arrows to you, I aim them
متىwhenever أرْمِI shoot at السُّهَىSuha (a star) لكَfor you أنْتَظِمْهُI pierce it
كأنّas though هَواكَlove for you فيin سَهْميmy arrow سَدادُtrue aim
Whenever I shoot at Suha for you, I pierce it,
As if your love in my arrow is integrity
As though love for you made my arrow fly true.
Your excellence wards off from you the poachers of meanings
تَذُودُdrives عُلاكَyour eminence شُرّادَthe fugitives of المَعانيmeanings

إليّto me فمَنْso who is زُهَيرٌZuhayr أوor زِيادُZiyad
Your eminence drives the fugitive meanings
To me, so who is Zuhayr or Ziyad?
Toward me—so who are Zuhayr or Ziyad?
When I repel them, men say
إذاwhen ماindeed صِدْتُهاI catch them قالتsaid رِجالٌmen

ألمْwas it not that تكُنِwere الكواكبُthe stars لاnot تُصادُhunted
When I catch them, men say:
"Were not the stars impossible to hunt?"
'Were the stars not beyond capture?'
Of those whom a talent supplied

وهَذّبَهُنّand refined them فِكْرٌthought وانْتِقادُand criticism
Among those supplied by native talent,
And thought and critique refined
And refined by thought and critical judgment.
And were it not for your excessive love
ولولاand were it not for فَرْطُthe excess of حُبّكَlove for you ماnot ازْدهانيenticed me
But for my overflowing love for you, I would not be lured
Neither the witty praise nor the constant would draw me to praise
Into praise by newly gained wealth or ancestral wealth.
The tongues of nights conceal you from me
تُوَرّيmake veiled mention عنكَof you أَلْسِنَةُthe tongues of اللّياليthe nights
كأنّكَas though you were فيin ضمائِرهَاtheir inner hearts اعتِقادُa belief
The tongues of the nights make veiled mention of you,
As if in their consciences is belief in you
As though you were a belief within their hearts.
So if time intends a meaning
فإنْso if يكُنِis الزّمانtime يريدُintends مَعْنىa meaning
فإنّكَthen you are ذلكَthat المَعْنىmeaning المُرادُintended
If time intends a meaning,
Then you are that intended meaning
Then you are that intended meaning.
A fated one almost met his doom

بسَيْفِكَby your sword لاnot يكونُthere is لهfor him مَعادُa resurrection
A doomed man who meets death is all but
By your sword, he will have no return
Beyond resurrection, slain by your sword.
