Indeed, your world, through excessive love for it, has come

to make many of its calamities seem few to us.

And if its misfortunes took visible form, you would hear them

raging, or see their eyes narrowed in anger.

It continually pelts us and heaps affliction upon us,

and kills us treacherously, and eyes us askance.

And sound reason has no doubt that its bounty

is scant, though its calamities have grown abundant.

    فَدَعها وَلا تَشرَب طِلاءً وَلا مِزرا

    And it has prepared for the mind wine that destroys it;

so leave it, and drink neither boiled-down wine nor grain beer.

Even if it brought forgiveness, I would deem it

forbidden—how much more so when it brings the burden of sin!

When it visits drinkers of sound judgment, it strips them bare,

and leaves among them neither a loincloth nor strength.
