أَناI لِصَرورَةِto abstinence فيin الحَياةِlife مُقارِنٌa companion
ماnot زُلتُI have ceased أَسبَحُI swim فيin البِحارِthe seas المُوَّجِsurging
In life, I am a companion to abstinence;
I am bound to fate throughout my life
I have never ceased swimming in the surging seas.
Still swimming in tumultuous seas
وَصَرورَةٌand uninitiated فيin شيمَتَينِtwo traits لِأَنَّنيbecause I
مُذsince كُنتُI came to be لَمnot أَحجُجI perform pilgrimage وَلَمand not أَتَزَوَّجِI marry
And I am uninitiated in two respects, because I
And bound by my two inherent traits
have, since I came to be, neither made pilgrimage nor married.
For I've not yet performed Hajj or married
مِنof مَذهَبيmy practice أَنthat لاnot أَشُدَّI bind بِفِضَّةٍwith silver
قَدَحيmy cup وَلاand not أُصغيI listen لِشَربِto a band of drinkers مُعَوَّجِwayward
It is my practice not to bind with silver
It is my way to not quaff from a silver
my cup, nor heed a wayward band of drinkers.
Goblet or heed crooked drinking
لَكِنbut أُقضيI spend مُدَّتيmy lifetime بِتَقَنُّعٍwith contentment
يَغنيsuffices وَأَفرَحُand I rejoice بِاليَسيرِin the little الأَروَجِmost readily circulating
But I spend my lifetime in contentment
Rather I spend my days content
that suffices, and rejoice in the little that circulates most readily.
Joyous with simple green sustenance
هَذاthis وَلَستُand I am not أَوَدُّI wish أَنّيthat I قائِمٌstanding
بِالمَلِكِas king فيin ثَوبَيthe two robes of أَغَرَّradiant مُتَوَّجِcrowned
This—and I do not wish that I were standing
Thus I stand not wishing that I
as king, in the two robes of a radiant, crowned man.
Wear royal garb or a dazzling crown
