In ignorance they give the names Abd al-Rahim,

    and Abd al-Aziz, and Abd al-Samad;

yet they have not attained to being His

servants—and that is the utmost goal.

Yet He is the Creator of the worlds,

of their parts, liquid and solid.

Seek Him; through guidance He will spare you from

    studying their Mughni and al-Umad.

If what befell me was by decree,

then prolonged grief comes of my poor judgment.

And no means remains in the matter

to shorten a lifespan or prolong it.

    Indeed, Thamud—their sea was assailed

by calamities, leaving not even a little water.

I saw the youth grow until he reached his prime,

and keep wasting away until he lay still,

like a lamp at night that appeared aglow,

then dwindled until it went out.

And were it not for Him whose judgment is clear,

we would say: 'Time has long endured.'

When eyes are extinguished in the earth,

they are safe from blindness or inflammation.
