إِذاif كُنتَyou are ذاpossessing ثِنتَينِtwo wives فَاِغدُthen go forth مُحارِباًfighting
إِذا كُنتَ ذا ثِنتَينِ فَاِغدُ مُحارِباً
عَدُوَّينِtwo enemies وَاِحذَرand beware مِنof ثَلاثِthree ضَرائِرِrival wives
عَدُوَّينِ وَاِحذَر مِن ثَلاثِ ضَرائِرِ
If you have two wives, then go forth to fight
Two enemies, and beware of three rival wives.
وَإِنand even if هُنَّthey أَبدَينَthey show المَودَةَaffection وَالرِضاand contentment
وَإِن هُنَّ أَبدَينَ المَودَةَ وَالرِضا
فَكَمfor how many مِنof حَقودٍgrudges غُيِّبَتwere concealed فيin السَرائِرِinnermost thoughts
فَكَم مِن حَقودٍ غُيِّبَت في السَرائِرِ
And even if they show affection and contentment,
For how many grudges lie hidden in their innermost thoughts!
قِرانُكَyour joining ماemphatic particle بَينَbetween النِساءِthe women أَذِيَّةٌharm
قِرانُكَ ما بَينَ النِساءِ أَذِيَّةٌ
لَهُنَّto them فَلاso do not تَحمِلbear أَذاةَthe harm الحَرائِرِfreeborn women
لَهُنَّ فَلا تَحمِل أَذاةَ الحَرائِرِ
Your joining women together is a harm
To them; so do not bear the harm of freeborn women.
وَإِنand if كُنتَyou are غِرّاًinexperienced بِالزَمانِwith time وَأَهلِهِand its people
وَإِن كُنتَ غِرّاً بِالزَمانِ وَأَهلِهِ
فَتَكفيكَthen suffices for you إِحدىone الآنِساتِcompanionable maidens الغَرائِرِguileless
فَتَكفيكَ إِحدى الآنِساتِ الغَرائِرِ
And if you are inexperienced with time and its people,
Then one of the guileless maidens will suffice for you.
لَقَدindeed وَدَّhave wished أَصحابُthose guilty of الكَبائِرِgrave sins لَوthat رَأَواthey could see
لَقَد وَدَّ أَصحابُ الكَبائِرِ لَو رَأَوا
جَرائِرَهُمtheir offenses مَقذوفَةًcast فيinto الجَرائِرِdeep wells
جَرائِرَهُم مَقذوفَةً في الجَرائِرِ
Indeed, those guilty of grave sins have wished they could see
Their offenses cast into deep wells.
