إِذاif كُنتَyou are لاnot تَسطيعُcan دَفعَward off صَغيرَةٍa small affliction
أَلَمَّتhas befallen وَلاand not تَسطيعُcan دَفعَward off كَبيرِa great affliction
If you cannot ward off a small affliction
If you cannot ward off a small affliction,
that has befallen you, nor can you ward off a great one,
Nor can you ward off a greater one,
فَسَلِّمthen entrust إِلىto اللَهِGod المَقاديرَthe decrees of fate راضِياًcontent
وَلاand do not تَسأَلَنever ask بِالأَمرِin the matter غَيرَone who is not خَبيرِknowledgeable
then entrust fate’s decrees to God, content,
Then resign all matters to Allah willingly,
and never consult anyone unversed in the matter.
And do not ask about them except from the All-Knowing.
وَلَيسَand is not بِغالٍtoo costly ناصِحٌa sincere adviser تَستَفيدُهُwhom you gain
وَلَوand even if كارَwere (apparently a typo for كان) مِنof تِبرٍuncoined gold بِمِثلِequal in size to ثَبيرِThabir
A sincere adviser you gain is not too costly,
There is no counselor too valuable
even if his price were a mass of gold like Thabir.
Even if he gives you a mountain of gold the size of Thabir.
