لَوif كانَhe was يَدريhe knew أُوَيسُUways ماجَنَتwhat it had committed يَدُهُhis hand
لَاِختارَhe would have chosen دونَrather than مُغارِraiding الثَلَّةِthe flock العَدَماnonexistence
If Uways had known what his hand had committed,
he would have chosen nonexistence rather than raiding the flock.
فَإِنَّfor indeed مِنamong أَقبَحِthe ugliest الأَشياءِthings يَفعَلُهُhe does it
شاكيone complaining of المَجاعَةِhunger يَوماًone day أَنto يُريقَhe spills دَماblood
For among the ugliest deeds committed
by one complaining of hunger is ever to spill blood.
ياO أَوسُAws هَيهاتَhow far off! كَمhow many قابَلتَyou faced هاجِرَةًa scorching noon
أَذكَتit kindled عَلَيكَagainst you وَقودَfuel الحَرِّthe heat فَاِحتَدَماso it blazed fiercely
O Aws, alas! How many a scorching noon you have faced,
which kindled heat's fuel against you until it raged.
وَكَمand how often طَرَقتَyou visited by night عَتوداًa young he-goat بَينَamong أَعنِزَةٍgoats
يَوماًone day فَفَرَّيتَand so you slashed منfrom أَحشائِهِits belly الأَدَماthe hide
And how often you came upon a young he-goat among goats,
one day, and slashed the hide from its belly.
مُطَرَّداًdriven away بِتَّyou spent the night لَمdid not تَبنِyou build الخِيامَthe tents ضُحىًat midmorning
وَلاand not تُراعُyou are alarmed إِذاif ماever بَيتُكَyour dwelling اِنهَدَماit collapsed
Driven away, you spent the night; you pitched no tents at midmorning,
nor are you alarmed if ever your dwelling collapses.
وَماand not كَسَوتَyou clothed إِذاwhen قَرٌcold أَتىcame جَسَداًa body
وَلاand not حَذَوتَyou shod حِذاراًfor fear لِلوَجىof foot-pain قَدَماa foot
Nor have you clothed a body when cold came,
nor shod a foot for fear of soreness.
جَمَعتَyou combined فيin كُلِّevery رِيٍّquenching of thirst سَلَّةًa theft وَرَدىًand death
نَفسٍof a soul فَهَلّاso why not سَرَقتَyou stole القُرصَthe loaf وَالحَدَماand boiled milk
With every full draught you combined theft and the death
of a soul; why did you not steal a loaf and boiled milk?
قَدmay يَقصُرُhe restricts النَفسَthe self إِعظاماًout of reverence لِبارِئِهِfor his Creator
عَلىto القَفارِplain bread مَنيبٌa penitent طالَماfor long اِئتَدَماhe ate relishes
One may restrict himself, out of reverence for his Creator,
to plain bread—a penitent who has long eaten relishes.
وَلاand not تَصومُyou fast لِوَجهِfor the sake of اللَهِGod مُحتَسِباًseeking divine reward
أَمor غَيرَother than صَومِكَyour fasting أَمسىhas become الهَمَّworry وَالسَدَماand grief
Nor do you fast for God's sake, seeking His reward;
or has anything other than your fasting become worry and grief?
أَتُضمِرُdo you intend inwardly? التَوبَrepentance مِنfrom ضَأنٍsheep تُرَوِّعُهاyou terrify them
أَمor كانَwas ذَلِكَthat داءًan affliction فيكُمُamong you قُدُماlong ago
Do you intend to repent of frightening sheep,
or was that an ancient affliction among your kind?
وَلَوand even if ظَفِرتَyou gained possession عَلىin حالٍany circumstance بِحالِيَةٍof an adorned woman
جَزَّأتَهاyou cut her into pieces وَنَبَذتَand you discarded السورَthe bracelets وَالخَدَماand the anklets
And even if, in any circumstance, you caught an adorned woman,
you would cut her into pieces and discard the bracelets and anklets.
وَهَلand did نَدِمتَyou regret عَلىfor طِفلٍa child فَجِعتَyou bereaved بِهِthrough him
أُماًa mother وَمِثلُكَand one like you لاdoes not يَستَشعِرُfeel inwardly النَدَماremorse
And have you regretted a child whose loss you inflicted upon
a mother? One like you feels no remorse.
وَلاand not يُوارىhe is buried إِذاwhen حَلَّتarrived مَنِيَّتُهُhis death
وَلاand not إِذاif ماتَhe dies فيin غارٍa cave لَهُfor him رُدِماit is sealed up
Nor is he buried when his death arrives,
nor, if he dies in a cave, is it sealed up for him.
وَكَمand how many ثَوىlay dead لَكَof yours جَدٌّan ancestor ماnot دَرىknew فَطِنٌa discerning one
مِنكُمamong you عَلىin أَيِّwhat أَمرٍcondition إِذwhen مَضىhe passed away قَدِماlong ago
And how many an ancestor of yours lay dead! No discerning one
among you knew in what state he passed away long ago.
