إِذاif لَمnot يَكُنthere be خَلفيbehind me كَبيرٌan elder يُضيعُهُwould leave him uncared for
إِذا لَم يَكُن خَلفي كَبيرٌ يُضيعُهُ
حِماميmy death وَلاnor طِفلٌa child فَفيمَthen what for? حَياتيmy life
حِمامي وَلا طِفلٌ فَفيمَ حَياتي
If there is no elder behind me to be left uncared for
If I have no grand epic behind to squander
by my death, nor any child, then what is my life for?
Nor child to leave so why should I wander?
وَماand not العَيشُlife إِلّاexcept عِلَّةٌan illness بُرؤُهاits cure الرَدىdeath
وَما العَيشُ إِلّا عِلَّةٌ بُرؤُها الرَدى
فَخَلّيso leave free سَبيليmy way أَنصَرِفlet me depart لِطِياتيtoward my intended destinations
فَخَلّي سَبيلي أَنصَرِف لِطِياتي
And life is nothing but an illness whose cure is death.
For what is life but ailment cured by death
So leave my way clear; let me depart where I intend.
So let me go back to eternal rest
