إِذاif اِبتَكَرَتshe goes early إِلىto العَرّافِthe soothsayer فَاِعرِفthen find out
إِذا اِبتَكَرَت إِلى العَرّافِ فَاِعرِف
مَكانَthe whereabouts of عَصاa stick تَصِكُّyou strike بِهاwith it قَراهاher back
مَكانَ عَصا تَصِكُّ بِها قَراها
If she goes early to the soothsayer, learn
If she goes to the soothsayer, then know
Where to find a stick to strike her back.
The place of the stick with which she knocks her villages
وَساوِرهاand assail her إِذاif أَبدَتshe displays سِواراًa bracelet
وَساوِرها إِذا أَبدَت سِواراً
وَبارِئهاand part from her مَتّىwhen كَشَفَتshe uncovers بُراهاher anklets
وَبارِئها مَتّى كَشَفَت بُراها
And assail her if she displays a bracelet,
And her bracelets when she shows a bracelet
And part from her when she uncovers her anklets.
And her Creator when she uncovers her innocence
وَحَذِّرهاand warn her against المُنَجِّمَthe astrologer فَهوَfor he is ذِئبٌa wolf
وَحَذِّرها المُنَجِّمَ فَهوَ ذِئبٌ
تُشَوِّقُهُmake him yearn الضَوائِنُthe sheep أَنto يَراهاsee them
تُشَوِّقُهُ الضَوائِنُ أَن يَراها
And warn her against the astrologer, for he is a wolf;
And warn her of the astrologer, for he is a wolf
The sheep make him long to see them.
Whose greed makes him want to see her
فَإِنfor if هِيَshe لَمdid not تُجِبهُrespond to him إِلىto قَبيحٍsomething vile
فَإِن هِيَ لَم تُجِبهُ إِلى قَبيحٍ
تَحَلَّبُهاhe milks her المَنافِعَthe gains وَاِمتَراهاand draws milk from her
تَحَلَّبُها المَنافِعَ وَاِمتَراها
For if she does not answer his call to something vile,
So if she does not answer him to vileness
He milks her for gain and draws her milk.
Her benefits will trick her and monitor her
يَقولُhe tells لَهاto her زَخارِفَornate falsehoods مُعرِباتٍeloquent
يَقولُ لَها زَخارِفَ مُعرِباتٍ
فَراهاfashioned them الأَوَّلونَthe ancients أَوِor اِفتَراهاhe fabricated them
فَراها الأَوَّلونَ أَوِ اِفتَراها
He tells her ornate, eloquent falsehoods,
He tells her embellished metaphors
Fashioned by the ancients, or invented by himself.
That the ancients have seen or fabricated
وَقَدand may يَجفوforsake الكَرىslumber مِنهاof hers جُفوناًeyelids
وَقَد يَجفو الكَرى مِنها جُفوناً
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle حَلَّsettles فيin ساقٍa shin كَراهاher leg-swelling
إِذا ما حَلَّ في ساقٍ كَراها
And slumber may forsake her eyelids
And time may turn away from her eyelids
When swelling settles in a shin of hers.
When it settles in a leg she dislikes
