إِذاif عُدَّتِare reckoned الأَوطانُthe homelands فيin كُلِّevery بَلدَةٍtown

If homelands in every town are reckoned
When homelands are like prisons in every country
prisons for a people, then graves are fortresses.
Graves become fortresses for a people
وَماand not كانَwas هَذاthis العَيشُlife إِلّاexcept إِذالَةًabasement
فَعَلَّso perhaps تُراباًdust بِالحِمامِthrough death يَصونُprotects
And this life has been nothing but abasement;
This life was but humiliation
so perhaps the dust will shelter us through death.
So let the pigeons cover me with dust
فَكُنso be بَعضَone of أَشجارٍtrees تَقَضَّتhave perished أُصولُهاtheir roots

So be one of the trees whose roots have perished,
Be like trees whose roots are severed
and no branches of theirs remain in the world.
With no branches left in this world
