إِذاif اِصفَرَّgrows pale الفَتىthe young man لِفُراقِat the departure of روحٍa soul
إِذا اِصفَرَّ الفَتى لِفُراقِ روحٍ
فَأَهوِنthen how trifling بِالتَصَعلُكِwith destitution وَالشُحوبِand pallor
فَأَهوِن بِالتَصَعلُكِ وَالشُحوبِ
If a young man pales as his soul departs,
then how trifling are destitution and pallor!
أَحوبِيَwas favored? صاحِبيmy companion فَأُعيرَand so was lent فَضلاًsuperiority
أَحوبِيَ صاحِبي فَأُعيرَ فَضلاً
عَلَيَّover me أَمor اِنتُقِصتُI was belittled لِأَجلِbecause of حَوبيmy sin
عَلَيَّ أَم اِنتُقِصتُ لِأَجلِ حَوبي
Was my companion favored, and so lent superiority
over me, or was I belittled because of my sin?
