رُحتُI went فيamong الناسِthe people كَرَبعٍlike a dwelling-place دارِسٍruined
أَخَذَتtook away مِنهُfrom it رِياحٌwinds وَمَطَرand rain
I went among people like a ruined dwelling,
I went among people like a studious scholar,
On which winds and rain had taken their toll.
The winds and rain took from him,
خَبَأَstored away الدَجنُthe cloud bank لِأَرضٍfor a land جَودَهُits abundant rain
وَطَوىand passed over أَرضيmy land بَخيلاًmiserly ماnot قَطَرit shed a drop
The cloud bank saved its abundant rain for one land,
The clouds concealed the generosity of the land,
And passed over mine, miserly, shedding not a drop.
And folded up the ground miserly, without dripping.
مُستَطارٌpanic-stricken أَناI مِنfrom خَوفِfear of الرِدىdeath
كُلُّevery شَيءٍthing فيin كِتابٍa book مُستَطَرwritten down
I am panic-stricken with fear of death;
I am wary of ruin,
Everything is written down in a book.
Everything in a sealed book is wary.
غَفَرَmay forgive اللَهُGod لِعَبدٍfor a servant غافِلٍheedless
هُوَhe فيin أَعظَمِthe greatest جَهلٍignorance وَخَطَرand peril
May God forgive a heedless servant,
May God forgive a heedless servant,
Who is in the gravest ignorance and peril.
He is in the greatest ignorance and danger.
تَرَكَhe abandoned الآجِلُthe life to come لَمdid not يَحفِلcare بِهِabout it
وَمِنَand from العاجِلِthe present life لَمdid not يَقضِfulfill الوَطَرthe desire
He abandoned the life to come, paying it no heed,
He who postpones left him, he did not care for him,
Nor did he fulfill his desire in the present life.
And he did not fulfill his present desires.
حَكَمَdecreed الرَبُّthe Lord لِبَدرٍfor a full moon فَاِستَوىso it became full
وَهِلالٍand a crescent مُستَجِدٍّnewly appearing فانَأطَرso it curved
The Lord ordained the full moon, and it grew round,
The Lord decreed for the full moon until it waned,
And a newborn crescent, and it curved.
And the new crescent until it disappeared.
تُظهِرُyou display الدينَreligion وَتُخفيand you conceal غَيرَهُwhat is other than it
إِنَّماonly شَأنُكَyour conduct مَكرٌdeceit وَبَطَرand wanton pride
You display religion and conceal something else;
You show religion and conceal others,
Your conduct is nothing but deceit and wanton pride.
Your way is merely deceit and trickery.
