I spoke, alive and radiant; so pardon

Him who made the radiant one speak—or blame me.

Ask about goodness, for my knowledge of it,

    Despite exhaustive inquiry, remains uncertain.

Our Lord has acted justly, while every person

Does wrong, and wrongdoing springs from baseness.

A free man may be slain, yet his faith

In obedience to God is not wounded.

Nothing in the sky and its horizons

Ascends higher than the prayer of one wronged.
