    I shall do good as much as I can; so let there be no

    prayer over me on the day I lie dead.

    For there is no goodness in you to lay claim to

    that would open the paths for me in the narrow pass.

    So who will convey my messages to a company—

    Ali, Mahmud, Khan, and Alik?

    ولَكِن أُضاهي المُقتَرينَ الصَعالِكا

    For I do not wish to be like the most exalted of you;

    but I resemble the impoverished paupers.

    And my reason recoils in anger if I leave it

    idle and follow al-Shafi‘i and Malik.
