سَأَرحَلُI shall depart عَنafter وَشكٍa short while وَلَستُand I am not بِعالِمٍaware
عَلىinto أَيِّwhat أَمرٍstate لاno أَباfather لَكَfor you أَقدُمُI enter
I shall depart soon, not knowing
what state I shall enter—may you have no father!
وَهَوَّنَand eased إِعداميmy poverty عَلَيَّfor me تَحَقُّقيmy certainty
بأَنّيthat I وَإِنand even if طالَlasts long التَمَكُّثُthe stay أُعدَمُI shall be annihilated
And my certainty has made my poverty easier to bear:
that, however long I stay, I shall cease to exist.
فَإِنso if لَمnot تَكُنthere is إِلّاonly الحَياةُlife وَبَينُهاand parting from it
فَلَستُthen I am not عَلىover أَيّامِهاits days أَتَنَدَّمُfeeling regret
So if there is only life and parting from it,
then I feel no regret for its days.
وَدُنياكَand your world يَهواهاhe loves it عَلىdespite الهَرَمِold age الفَتىthe man
وَيَخدُمُهاand serves it فيماin whatever يَنوبُbefalls المُخَدَّمُthe one who is served
And a man loves your world despite old age,
and one who is served serves it through whatever befalls him.
أَرىI see الشَخصَthe person يَطويis folded away المَمالِكَthe kingdoms تَحتَويare engulfed
وَمَنand whoever صَحَّis healthy يَذويwithers وَالمُجادِلُand fortresses تُهدَمُare demolished
I see the person folded away, the kingdoms engulfed,
and whoever is healthy withers, and fortresses are demolished.
مَنَعتَyou withheld الهَوىlove مِنّيfrom me وَسُمتَنِيَand subjected me to الهَوىdownfall
وَقَدand may يَبلُغُattain الحاجَneeds الفَنيقُthe stud camel المُسَدَّمُmuzzled
You denied me love and consigned me to ruin,
yet even a muzzled stud camel may attain its needs.
إِذاwhen رُؤَساءُthe chiefs الناسِof the people أَمّواtake the lead تَنازَعواvie with one another
كُؤوسَcups الأَذىof harm هَلis there? فيin الزُجاجَةِthe bottle عِندَمُred dye
When the people's chiefs take the lead, they vie over
cups of harm—is there red dye in the bottle?
وَلَمand did not يُرضِهِمsatisfy them شُربُdrinking المُدامَةِwine أَذهَبَتit swept away
حِجىthe reason النَفسِof the soul إِلّاexcept أَنthat يُمازِجَهاmingle with it الدَمُblood
Nor did drinking wine satisfy them, though it swept away
the soul's reason, unless blood mingled with it.
فَنَحنُso we كَأَيمِlike the serpent of الضالِthe wild lote-tree أَولىbestowed مِراسَهُits ways
بِماwith what كانَused to يَغويlead astray الآخَرَthe other المُتَقَدِّمُthe earlier one
So we are like the wild lote-tree's serpent, whose ways were imparted
by the earlier one, who used them to lead the other astray.
وَحَوّاءُand Eve أَعطَتgave بِنتَهاher daughter البُؤسَmisery وَاِبنَهاand her son
لِآدَمَby Adam يُغذىis fed بِالشَقاءِon suffering وَيُؤدَمُand is given it as relish
And Eve gave her daughter misery, while her son
by Adam is fed on suffering and given it as relish.
