I seek refuge in my Lord from His wrath,

and from my soul's negligence and excess.

    Kings submit, however exalted,

to what He wills, in their forerunners' wake.

And decrees from Him run their course upon

the great stars and their lesser ones.

Nor have the sages among men warded off

death with the wisdom of their Hippocrates.

Yet a decree comes that shows

you one of their fools as the equal of their Socrates.

So let no clenched hand withhold

its qirat from the seeker of alms.
