I see you thought the star was no admonisher,

wise though you are, and imagined the full moon does not speak.

Yes, word has reached us that whatever exists will pass away,

but we are in a world that does not know.

And indeed the man of your world is blind, yet sees al-Suhā,

ill yet healthy, an oppressor who complains of being wronged.

Does the sun, then, suffer calamities as we do,

or has it become whole, like the crags, which feel no pain?

And is there among you a miser who displays generosity,

making a show of it, or a fool who feigns forbearance?

And fate has never made peace with the living; rather,

one climbs toward death, and safety is a ladder.

So, O free man who bleeds his palm for benefit,

does the wounded captive seek healing through wounds?

    فَحِندِسُنا عِندَ الظَهيرَةِ مُظلِمُ

    By my life, our condition has indeed confounded all standards of comparison;

for our night is dark even at noon.

So some in ritual consecration do not deny the sword-edges blood,

and some inviolable lions have claws that go untrimmed.

We are weak in everything except doing harm,

and even a blunt, notched sword may scar the face.

And indeed the desert's male ostrich is pleased with his down,

and understands his companions, though he is earless.
