I see the sea is salty, granting no water-seeker

a draught; so swim in the mirage and thirst.

You turn from certainty's path, as though

a blind man led you by night, or willful blindness overtook you.

Vipers' venoms in the oppression of lair-dwelling lions,

and wolves' guile in the minds of ostriches.

And how many a year passed when I was not among its people,

and how many a year's crescent moons were cast behind me.

So away with a soul that remains abject

for love of drink or for love of food.
