أَرىI see الخَيرَgoodness فيin عُمُريmy life حَسرَةًregret
لِأَنّيbecause I عَنwith regard to فِعلِهِdoing it عاجِزُunable
I see goodness in my life as a source of regret,
because I am unable to do it.
إِذاwhen رُمتُهُI seek it مَرَّةًonce فيin الزَمانِtime
رَجَعتُI turn back وَليand I have دونَهُbefore it حاجِزُa barrier
When I seek it once in the course of time,
I turn back, with a barrier between me and it.
يُماطِلُkeeps waiting جَدٌّfortune أَخاa man of حاجَةٍneed
لَهُfor him أَجَلٌan allotted term بِالرَدىby death ناجِزُpromptly fulfilled
Fortune keeps a man in need waiting,
whose allotted term is promptly brought to an end by death.
وَلَمand did not أَرقَI ascend فيin دَرَجاتِthe ranks of الكَريمِthe noble man
وَهَلand does يَبلُغُreach الشاعِرَthe poet الراجِزُthe rajaz versifier
And I have not climbed the heights of the noble man;
and can the rajaz versifier attain the poet's stature?
