I see a new pregnancy arising among women—
I see a new burden has come upon women, a burden of sorrows has connected with them
a cord of harm that has bound itself to them.
A child came with a register of troubles, oh if only he who came had not arrived
أَتىarrived وَلَدٌa child بِسِجِلِّwith a scroll العَناءِsuffering

فَياso, oh لَيتَif only وارِدَهُits bearer ماnot وَصَلarrived
فَيا لَيتَ وارِدَهُ ما وَصَل
A child arrived bearing a scroll of suffering;
And if the misfortunes of time look upon him, they will bite with sharp teeth
oh, if only its bearer had never arrived!
And attack the invaders with spears thrusting and swords slashing
وَإِنand even if أَنظَرَتهُgranted him respite خُطوبُcalamities الزَماof time (continued)

And even if time’s calamities grant him respite,
And the caller to the faith said to him, pray, while an atheist said to him, do not pray
he is bitten by a sharply curved fang.
He grew up and grew youthful and wasted his youth, while gray hairs were dripping onto him

And he was terrified by sudden reversals of fortune—
And after that the heat will come, so look upon what he has ended up with
the spear’s screech and the sword’s clang.
Oh comfort of the soul at the time of death, if only this account would disconnect

The caller to guidance told him, “Pray!”
And an unbeliever told him, “Do not pray!”

And he grew up, grew gray, and exhausted his youth;
and may rain bless it—a dye that has worn off!

And after that comes death;
so consider what he has gained.

Oh, what rest for the soul at death—
if this reckoning has come to an end!
