رَأَيتُكَI saw you فيin لُجٍّdeep waters مِنَof البَحرِthe sea سابِحاًswimming
تَلومُyou blame بَنيthe sons of الدُنياthis world وَأَنتَand you مَليمُblameworthy
I saw you swimming in the depths of the sea,
You blame the sons of this world, though you yourself are blameworthy.
يَقُلُsays الحِجىreason هَلwill there be? ليfor me إِذwhen مُتُّI have died راحَةٌrest
فَإِنَّfor indeed عَذابيmy torment فيin الحَياةِlife أَليمُpainful
Reason says: Will I find rest when I die?
For my torment in life is painful.
وَأَجسامُناand our bodies مِثلُlike الدِيارِdwellings لِأَنفُسٍfor souls
جَوائِرَwayward مِنهاamong them جاهِلٌan ignorant one وَحَليمُand a wise one
And our bodies are like dwellings for souls,
Wayward ones, some ignorant and some wise.
فَإِمّاso either اِنهِدامٌcollapse قَبلَbefore رِحلَةِthe departure of ظاعِنٍa traveler
وَإِمّاor else رَحيلٌdeparture وَالمَحَلُّand the dwelling سَليمُintact
So either collapse comes before a traveler's departure,
Or departure comes while the dwelling remains intact.
