فَقَدتُI have lost البُحورَthe seas وَأَهلَand the people of الوَفاءِfidelity
وَأَصبَحتُand I have come to be فيin غَدرٍtreachery كَالغُدُرlike the pools
I have lost the seas and the people of fidelity,
I have lost the seas and people of loyalty
And now I dwell in treachery like pools.
And find myself amidst treachery like treachery itself
وَماand not زالَceased يَردُؤُto deteriorate ذاكَthat الجَوادُnoble steed
حَتّىuntil أَبَرَّsurpassed عَلَيهِover him الكُدُرthe dun-colored asses
And that noble steed kept growing worse,
That generous one kept defending
Until the dun-colored asses surpassed him.
Until the sorrows prevailed over him
تَعودُreturn الجُسومُthe bodies إِلىto عُنصُرٍan element
بِهِwith it مَدَرَتwere plastered فيin الحِياضِthe troughs المُدُرthe clay clods
Bodies return to an element
Bodies return to their elements
With which clay clods were plastered in the troughs.
With which they rotated in the ponds
يَشُقُّmakes things hard الحَريصُthe greedy man عَلىfor نَفسِهِhimself
وَيَطلُبُand seeks مِنfrom عَيشِهِhis livelihood أَنthat يَدُرit yield abundantly
The greedy man makes things hard for himself,
The greedy person struggles for himself
And seeks abundant yield from his livelihood.
And seeks that his livelihood flows
وَيَأتيand comes to الفَتىthe young man رِزقُهُhis sustenance وادِعاًat ease
وَلَوeven if كانَhe were فيon النيقِthe mountain summit عِندَamong الفُدُرthe full-grown ibex
A young man's sustenance comes to him while he rests,
And the youth's sustenance comes to him calmly
Even if he is on a mountain summit among full-grown ibex.
Even if it were by the cooking pots
فَلاso do not تَغبِطَنَّever envy ذَويthose possessing نِعمَةٍprosperity
فَإِنَّfor indeed المَناياthe dooms of death غِضابٌwrathful هُدُرbellowing
So never envy those who prosper,
So do not envy people of luxury
For death's dooms are wrathful and bellowing,
For death is a raging destruction
وَلَوeven if عَوَّضواthey substituted عَنبَراًambergris عَنin place of بُراًdust
وَبُدَّلَand were exchanged يَوماًone day حَصاهُمtheir pebbles بِدُرّfor pearls
Even if they substituted ambergris for dust,
Even if they substituted amber for musk
And their pebbles were one day exchanged for pearls.
And a day counted their pearls
جَرىarose خُلُفٌdisagreement وَاِدَّعىand claimed المُدَّعونَthe claimants
إِنّاindeed we عَلىof ماwhatever أَرَدناwe wished قُدُرcapable
A dispute arose, and the claimants claimed:
Changes have occurred and the claimants claimed
"We have power to do whatever we wish."
"We have power over what we desired"
وَقالَتand said مَعاشِرُgroups of people لاnot نَستَطيعُwe are able
بَلَrather نَحنُwe مِثلُlike الرُبىthe hills وَالجُدُرand the walls
And groups of people said, "We cannot;
And a group said "We cannot"
Rather, we are like hills and walls."
"Rather we are like rubbles and walls"
وَكُلُّand everyone يُؤَمَّلُhopes for صَفوَthe unclouded joy of الحَياةِlife
وَذَلِكَand that فيin فَلَكٍa celestial sphere لَمnever يَدُرhas revolved
And everyone hopes for life's unclouded joy,
And everyone hopes for the essence of life
And that lies in a celestial sphere that has never turned.
That is in an orbit that does not turn
