I have learned Time’s ways: as for its evils,

they are ready cash; and as for its good, mere promises.

If the world is thus, then leave it behind,

even if all the rising stars are auspicious.

We slept, yet could not secure repose free from harm,

and it rose to bring about what we feared, while we sat still.

So let whoever is still mounted never fear death,

for a descent into the dust is an ascent.

And how often thunderbolts have warned us of floods,

and how often thunderclaps have told us of clouds!
