وَجَدتُكُمُI found you لَمdid not تَعرِفواyou know سُبُلَpaths الهِدىguidance
فَلاso do not تُوَضِّحواmake clear لِلقَومِto the people سُبلَpaths المَهالِكplaces of ruin
I found that you did not know the paths of guidance;
I found you knew not the paths of guidance,
So do not show the people the paths to ruin.
So reveal not to the people the ways to ruin.
أَخَيرٌis there goodness? عَلىon مَجرىa course قَديمٍancient كَلَهذَمlike a keen spearhead
يُفَرِّجُopens up لِلخَطَّيِّfor the Khatti lance ضيقَthe narrowness of المَسالِكthe passages
Is goodness, on an age-old course, like a keen spearhead
A good man on an ancient course worn down
That opens the narrow passages for the Khatti lance?
Makes easy the way for the sinner in straits.
وَماand ... is not الدَهرُtime إِلّاexcept حالِكٌpitch-dark بَعدَafter أَبيَضٍwhite
يُذيعُdoes away بِناwith us أَوor أَبيَضٌwhite بَعدَafter حالِكِpitch-dark
And time is but a black night after a white day,
And time is but a destroyer after prosperity
Sweeping us away, or a white day after a black night.
Announcing our ruin or prosperity after ruin.
بَلَوتُI have examined أُمورَaffairs of الناسِthe people مِنsince عَهدِthe time of آدَمٍAdam
فَلَمand did not أَرَI see إِلّاexcept هالِكاًone perishing إِثرَafter هالِكِone perishing
I have examined people's affairs since the time of Adam,
I have tested the affairs of mankind since Adam’s time
And have seen only one perishing after another.
And have found naught but ruin after ruin.
مَتّىwhen مُتُّI die لَمwill not أَحفِلI heed تَحِيَّةَa greeting of واقِفٍsomeone standing
عَلَيَّover me وَلَمand will not أَعلَمI know بِإِحدىof a single one of المَآلِكِthe messages
When I die, I shall heed no greeting from anyone standing
When I die I shall not heed any mourner’s greeting,
Over me, nor know of a single message.
Nor know which of the ways to death I go.
إِذاif كانَis هَذاthis التُربُdust يَجمَعُgathers بَينَناbetween us
فَأَهلُthen the people of الرَزاياcalamities مِثلُlike أَهلِthe people of المَمالِكِkingdoms
If this dust gathers us together,
If this dust brings us together in the end,
Then the afflicted are like the lords of kingdoms.
The people of burdens are like the people of kingdoms.
