وَكَيفَand how ليfor me بِخَلاصٍa deliverance مِنهُمُfrom them دانِnear
I dissemble with people; I have been afflicted by them.
And how can deliverance from them be near to me?
مَنwhoever عاشَlived غَيرَwithout مُدّاجٍdissembling مَنthose whom يُعاشِرُهُhe associates with

Whoever lives without concealing his feelings from those he associates with
Treats companions and close friends poorly.
كَمhow many صاحِبٍa friend يَتَمَنّىwishes لَوif only نُعيتُI were reported dead لَهُto him
وَإِنand if تَشَكَّيتُI complained راعانيhe showed me concern وَفَدّانيand offered to ransom me
How many a friend wishes he would hear of my death,
Yet, if I complain, shows concern for me and offers to ransom me.
صَحِبتُI kept company with دَهريmy age وَسوءُand grievous الغَدرِtreachery شيمَتُهُis its habit

I have kept company with my age, whose habit is grievous treachery;
So if I betray, my age has infected me.

I do not care, though my sleeves are free of flaws,
If death should lay me low.

When I join my peer in the dust, praise and blame
From people in pairs and singly will slip away from my grave.

حِسّاًsensation بِكَثرَةِin the multitude of زُوّارٍvisitors وَسُدّانِand attendants
Does the pilgrims’ Kaaba take pride, when it has no sense,
In the multitude of visitors and attendants?

There are two feasts in the year; they gain nothing from what they are given
That they should show delight when called feasts.
كَمhow often عَبَّدَmade serve الفَتَيانِthe two young men الخَلقَthe people عَنfor عُرُضٍpassing gain

بِذِلَةٍthrough humiliation وَهُماwhile the two لِلَّهِof God عَبدانِare servants
How often the two young men have made people serve them for passing gain,
Through humiliation, though both are servants of God.
أَمّاas for الجَديدانِthe two new ones مِنof ثَوبيmy garment وَمِنand of جَسَديmy body

As for the two new things, my garment and my body,
They will wear out, while the two ever-new ones will not.

The cloak of youth and the weaver’s cloak have both grown worn;
And can two cloaks endure the two spells of cold?
