    I called out until hoarseness appeared in my speech.

    People differed, and so did aims and creeds.

    They hoped for an imam who would rightfully rise for them.

    Far from it! No—rather, a sojourn, then departure.

    And they will remain in adversity in their time,

    as long as Mars or Saturn is above them.

    فَالخَلقُ أَمرَهُ أَو فيهِ الدُجى كَحلُ

    So, making haste, gather up calamity’s hem as you go;

    for creation wears no kohl—or darkness within it is kohl.

    We fulfill our desires while the hours hurry on,

    as though they were unruly steeds, tame beneath us.
