سَأَلتُI asked عَنِabout الأَجيالِthe generations فيin كُلِّevery بُرهَةٍperiod of time
فَكانواand they were فَريقاًa group سارَwent إِثرَafter فَريقِa group
I asked about the generations in every age,
And they were one group that followed another.
كَأَنَّas though بُرَيقاًa little lightning-flash لِاِمرِءِfor Imru’ القَيسِal-Qays لامِعاًgleaming
أَغَصَّmade choke جَميعَall الشائِمينَthe lightning-watchers بِريقِon saliva
As though a little lightning-flash, gleaming for Imru’ al-Qays,
Had made all the lightning-watchers choke on their saliva.
وَخَرَّقَand shredded ثَوبَthe garment العَيشِof life طولُlong duration لِباسِهِits being worn
وَهَبَّتand blew حَريقٌa fierce wind طُيِّرَتwas sent flying بِحَريقِby a blaze
And prolonged wear shredded the garment of life,
And a fierce wind blew, sent flying by a blaze.
إِذاif أَنتَyou عاتَبتَyou reproached المَقاديرَfate's decrees لَمnot تَزَلcease to be
كَعُتبَةَlike ʿUtbah أَوor كَالرَخنَسِlike al-Rakhnas بنِson of شُرَيقِShurayq
If you reproach fate's decrees, you remain
Like ʿUtbah, or like al-Rakhnas son of Shurayq.
وَمازالَand he kept يُخبيquenching جاهِداًstriving نارَthe fire قَومِهِof his people
أَبوAbu (father of) لَهَبٍLahab (flame) حَتّىuntil مَضىhe went لِحَريقِto a blaze
And he kept striving to quench his people's fire—
Abu Lahab—until he went to a blaze.
أَلَمdid ... not? تَرَyou see أَنَّthat المَرءَa man فَوقَupon فِراشِهِhis bed
يَفوقُgasps عَلىin ظَمءٍthirst فُواقَa gasp غَريقِof a drowning man
Have you not seen that a man upon his bed
Gasps in thirst with a drowning man's gasp?
فَإِنّيfor indeed I أَرىsee البِطريقَthe patrician وَالراهِبَand the monk الَّذيwho
بِقُلَّتِهِon his mountaintop ساراthe two traveled مَعاًtogether بِطَريقِalong a road
For I see that the patrician and the monk who
Dwells on his mountaintop have traveled one road together.

خِضابُthe dye حِمامٍof death لِلنُفوسِof souls مُريقِa shedder
It colors his ten fingertips with safflower—
The dye of death, shedder of souls.
وَماand not يَترُكُspares الضِرغامَthe lion فيin أَجَماتِهِits thickets
وَلاnor ذاتَa female possessing رَوقٍa horn فيin ظِلالٍshade وَريقِleafy
And it does not spare the lion in its thickets,
Nor the horned female beast in leafy shade.
