    I advised you: do not venture to commit a shameful deed.

    And fear a God of immemorial age.

    The sons of Adam—I know not the purpose of the one who

    brought them forth, nor whether any among them is sound of skin.

    And you see only a learned man like an ignorant one,

    despite his knowledge, or a rich man like a pauper.

    وَكَم مِن مُدامٍ بَرَحَت بِمُديمِ

    And they have no good to offer a companion;

    and how much wine has brought suffering upon a habitual drinker!

    So do not drink it as long as you live; and if you incline

    toward error, then drink it without a drinking companion.
