كَمhow many آيَةٍa sign يُؤنِسُهاdiscerns it مَعشَرٌa people
فَلاso not يُبالونَthey care وَلاand not يَتَّقونthey guard themselves
How many a sign a people discern,
How many signs are made convivial by a group,
yet they neither care nor guard themselves!
Yet they care not, nor do they become righteous,
فيin هُوَّةٍan abyss حَطّواthey descended وَمِنand from رَأيِهِمtheir opinion
أَنَّهُمthat they فيin رَفعَةٍa lofty station يَرتَقونthey ascend
They have descended into an abyss, yet they believe
In an abyss they have fallen, and in their opinion,
that they are ascending to a lofty height.
They are ascending to the highest elevation,
وَهُمand they أُسارىcaptives فيin يَدَيthe two hands of عَيشِهِمtheir life
لَعَلَّهُمperhaps they عِندَat الرَدىdeath يُعتَقونare set free
And they are captives in the hands of the life they live;
Yet they are captives in the hands of their livelihood,
perhaps at death they will be set free.
Perhaps when loss comes, they will be set free,
ماhow أَغدَرَtreacherous الدَهرَTime وَأَبناءَهُand its sons
لِأَنَّهُمbecause they مِنfrom بَحرِهِits sea يَستَقونthey draw water
How treacherous are Time and its sons,
How deceitful is time and its children,
for they draw water from its sea!
For they draw from its sea and are nourished,
كَمhow often ظَلَمَwronged الأَقوامُthe peoples أَمثالَهُمtheir own kind
ثُمَّتَthen بادواthey perished فَمَتىso when يَلتَقونwill they meet
How often peoples have wronged their own kind,
How many people like them were unjust,
then perished—so when will they meet?
Then perished - so when will they be guided?
