كَمhow many a أُمَّةٍcommunity لَعِبَتtoyed بِهاwith it جُهّالُهاits fools
كَم أُمَّةٍ لَعِبَت بِها جُهّالُها
فَتَنَطَّسَتso grew meticulous مِنfrom قَبلُbefore فيin تَعذيبِهاtormenting it
فَتَنَطَّسَت مِن قَبلُ في تَعذيبِها
How many a community has been toyed with by its fools,
How many a nation has been ruined by its ignorant ones
who had previously grown meticulous in tormenting it.
Who sunk it down before into torment
الخَوفُfear يُلجِئُهاcompels it إِلىto تَصديقِهاbelieving them
الخَوفُ يُلجِئُها إِلى تَصديقِها
وَالعَقلُand reason وَيحمِلُهاand leads it عَلىto تَكذيبِهاdisbelieving them
وَالعَقلُ وَيحمِلُها عَلى تَكذيبِها
Fear compels it to believe them,
Fear drives it to believe in them
while reason leads it to disbelieve them.
And reason carries it to deny them
وَجِبِلَّةُand the inborn nature of الناسِmankind الفَسادُcorruption فَظَلَّso remained مَنone who
وَجِبِلَّةُ الناسِ الفَسادُ فَظَلَّ مَن
يَسموaspires بِحِكمَتِهِthrough his wisdom إِلىto تَهذيبِهاrefining it
يَسمو بِحِكمَتِهِ إِلى تَهذيبِها
Corruption is mankind's inborn nature; so there remains one
Corruption is people's nature so he who rose
who aspires, through his wisdom, to refine it.
With his wisdom to refine it remained
ياO ثُلَّةًflock فيin غَفلَةٍheedlessness وَأُوَيسُهاand its Uways الthe (al-)
يا ثُلَّةً في غَفلَةٍ وَأُوَيسُها ال
القَرَنِيُّal-Qarani مِثلُlike أُوَيسِهاits little wolf (uways) أَيthat is ذيبِهاits wolf
القَرَنِيُّ مِثلُ أُوَيسِها أَي ذيبِها
O heedless flock, whose Uways al-
O band in negligence though its Uways loathes
Qarani is like its uways—that is, its wolf!
Not like its Uways or melter is Quranee
سُبحانَglory be to مُجَمِّدِone who freezes راكِدٍstill water وَمُقِرِّهِand holding it still
سُبحانَ مُجَمِّدِ راكِدٍ وَمُقِرِّهِ
وَمُميرِand stirring لَجَّةِthe deep of زاخِرٍa surging sea وَمُذيبُهاand melting it
وَمُميرِ لَجَّةِ زاخِرٍ وَمُذيبُها
Glory be to Him who freezes still water and holds it fast,
Glory to the Permanent, Settled and His Confirmer
and stirs the deep of a surging sea and melts it.
And He who melts the ice of gushing and its melter
