ماhow أَوصَلَgenerous السَيفَthe sword قَطّاعاًever cutting لِحامِلِهِto its bearer
وَأَبلَغَand how eloquent الذابِلَthe slender spear المَوصوفَdescribed بِالخَطَلِas wavering
How generous the sword is to its bearer, though ever cutting!
The sword never connected its bearer as a cutter
And how eloquent the slender spear, described as wavering!
And the languid one never achieved the one described as slack
قَدindeed وافَياكَboth came to you بِتاجِwith the crown المُلكِof kingship عَنfrom عُرُضٍan unexpected quarter
وَأَثرَياكَand both enriched you بِحَليِwith the jewels الكاعِبِof the budding-breasted maiden العُطُلِunadorned
The two have indeed brought you the crown of kingship from an unexpected quarter,
They brought you the crown of kingship generously
And enriched you with the jewels of the unadorned, budding-breasted maiden.
And endowed you with the adornment of the idle cavalier
وَأحرَزاكَand both protected you بِمِقدارٍby fate's decree إِلىuntil أَمَدٍan appointed time
وَأَنجَزاand both fulfilled لَكَfor you وَعدَthe promise الكُذَّبِof the liars المُطُلِwho delay fulfillment
And protected you, by fate's decree, until an appointed time,
And secured you for a period of time
And fulfilled for you the promise of lying procrastinators.
And fulfilled for you the promise of the mendacious procrastinator
وَالسَيفُand the sword إِنif قالَspeaks أَبدىgives forth نَبأَةًa faint sound عَجَباًwondrous

And if the sword speaks, it utters a wondrous, faint sound,
And if the sword ever spoke, it would reveal wondrous news
In the measure of two letters—it neither says much nor speaks at length.
In the rhyme of two letters, it did not prolong or drag on
سَلمانُSalman تُفهَمُis understood عَنهُfrom him فارِسِيَّتُهُhis Persian
فَدَعso leave aside سُلَيمانَSulayman وَالمَعنىand the meaning is رَدىperished البَطَلُthe hero
Salman—his Persian is understood from him;
Salman, his Persian origin is understood from him
So leave Sulayman aside; the meaning is: 'The hero has perished.'
So leave Solomon alone and the meaning has returned the hero
