    فَلَيسَ خِلُّكَ عِندَ الشَرِّ مَأمونا

    Honor your guest, and beware of his treacherous acts;

    For your close friend cannot be trusted when evil comes.

    And the usual state of affairs among neighbors is that they

    Are ill-natured folk, blaming a neighbor or being blamed.

    The eyes of some people sleep, heedless of their treasures,

    And those seeking to harm them do not sleep.

    Lodge with whomever you wish; he will not spare you calamity.

    The Yemenis have all proved treacherous, and the people of al-Sham too.

    فَالنَبتُ وَالوَحشُ وَالإِنسِيُّ نامونا

    A community of varied kinds: some growing, some inert;

    For plants, wild beasts, and humankind are growing beings.

    Does the earth feel when trampled, and the dust when

    It is heaped up, like people who are wronged?

    Or is feeling reserved for that sentient world alone,

    So that its members deserve praise or are censured?

    فَهَل عَلِمتُم يَقيناً ما تُسامونا

    You spent the night being offered ranks of lofty attainment;

    Have you, then, learned for certain what you are being offered?
