عَلَيكَyou must hold fast بِتَقوىto reverence for اللَهِGod فيin كُلِّevery حالَةٍcircumstance
فَإِنَّfor indeed الَّذيthe one who نَصَّdrove hard الرِكابَthe riding camels سَيُبرِكُwill make them kneel
Hold fast to reverence for God in every circumstance;
Put your trust in God in every state,
For he who drove the riding camels hard will make them kneel.
For He who provided steps will bless you,
إِذاwhen مَرَّتِpass الأَوقاتُthe times حُرِّكَis set in motion ساكِنٌa still thing
وَسُكِّنَand is brought to rest فيin أَضعافِهاtheir folds المُتَحَرِّكُthe moving thing
As time passes, what is still is set in motion,
When times pass, the still is stirred,
And within its folds, what moves is brought to rest.
And the stirred, in its multiples, is stilled,
تَبايَنَdiffered فيin الدينِreligion المَقالُopinion فَجاحِدٌso one is a denier
وَصاحِبُand an adherent of تَوحيدٍmonotheism وَآخَرُand another مُشرِكُa polytheist
Opinions about religion differ: one is a denier,
Religion's words differ - so one disbelieves,
And one professes God's oneness, and another is a polytheist.
Another upholds divine oneness, another associates others,
وَتُعجِزُand thwarts دُنياكَyour world القَويَّthe strong man يَرومُهاhe seeks it
وَيَطلُبُand seeks أُخراهُhis hereafter الضَعيفُthe weak man فَيودرِكُso he attains it
And your world thwarts the strong man who seeks it,
Your strong world frustrates you though you covet it,
And the weak man seeks his hereafter and attains it.
Yet the weak attain their hereafter and gain it,
وَمَنand who لِلفَتىfor the young man وَهُوَwhile he is الشَقيُّthe wretched one بِأَنَّهُthat he
يَدومُwill remain عَلىin ضَنكِthe straits of الشَقاءِmisery وَيُترَكُand be left alone
And who can assure a young man, wretched though he is, that he
What can help the wretched lad who persists
Will remain in misery's straits and be left alone?
In wretched misery and is abandoned?
وَلَمand I have not أَرَseen إِلّاexcept أُمَّMother of دَفرٍStench ظَعينَةًa wife
تُحَبُّis loved عَلىdespite غَدرٍtreachery قَبيحٍvile وَتَفرِكُand loathes her husband
And I have seen no wife but Umm Dafr, the Mother of Stench,
I have seen none but a perfidious mother
Loved despite vile treachery, while she loathes her husband.
Who loves foul betrayal and abandons.
