He has indeed gained manifest good among his fellows—

he who was hidden beneath his tongue.

Speech incurs sin, while silence does not,

as a rule, incur any sin.

If someone rises above you, how many

a banner has been raised high by a follower of strife!

Wait! Was it from a plague you fled? And do you see

in this world any dwelling but one stricken with plague?

Noble women are taken captive, and the dark-red wine, their drink,

is found purchased for the vilest drinker.

The coarse cloak's companion will one day have his counterpart

in a king, whose prepared perfume will be left behind.
