Had you been people of purity, the one naming you would have said,

“Safwiyya”—and so used the word without transposing its letters.

Troops of Iblis, at times in Bitlis,

and at other times they milk a living in Aleppo.

You sought provisions across the horizons out of greed,

yet God is truly found wherever He is sought.

    إِنَّ التَقِيَّ إِذا زاحَمتَهُ غَلَبا

    And by this I mean only the wicked among you;

indeed, the pious man prevails when you contend with him,

    وَالبَدرُ قَد جَلَّ عَن ذَمٍّ وَإِن ثُلِبا

    like the sun: no stain has drawn near its rays;

and the full moon stands above reproach, even if reviled.

And I see no people whose sound judgment has gone astray

as anything but the like of the Christians, who exalted crosses.

O house of Israel, is your Messiah hoped for?

Far from it! He who was beguiled has discerned things.

We said, 'He came to us and was not crucified'; and you say,

'He has not yet come'; and a community said, 'He was crucified.'

You brought the Torah's falsehood from far away,

and many a far-off evil has been brought upon a young man.

How often people are killed! The sole aim of one who sets

his two hands to killing is to seize the spoils.

Through contradiction the pillar of religion stands: one faction

builds lofty edifices, while another digs wells.
