لَوhad اِتَّبَعونيthey followed me وَيحَهُمalas for them لَهَدَيتُهُمI would have guided them
إِلىto الحَقِّthe truth أَوor نَهجٍa path لِذاكَto that مُقارِبِclose
Had they followed me—alas for them!—I would have guided them
to the truth, or to a path close to it.
فَقَدfor indeed عِشتُI have lived حَتّىuntil مَلَّنيgrew weary of me وَمَلَلتُهُand I grew weary of it
زَمانيmy time وَناجَتنيand confided in me عُيونُeyes التَجارُبِexperiences
For I have lived until it wearied of me, and I of it—
my time—and the eyes of experience confided in me.
إِذاwhen حانَcomes وَقتيmy time فَالمُثَقَّفُthen the straightened spear طاعِنيmy piercer
بِغَيرِwithout مُعينٍa helper وَالمُهَنَّدُand the Indian-forged sword ضارِبيmy striker
When my hour comes, the straightened spear will pierce me,
with no helper, and the Indian-forged sword will strike me.
وَإِنّاand indeed we مِنَof الغَبراءِthe dusty earth فَوقَupon مَطِيَّةٍa mount
مُذَلَّلَةٍtamed ماnever أَمكَنَتyielded to يَدَthe hand of خارِبِa camel-thief
And we ride upon a mount—the dusty earth—
tamed, yet never yielding to a camel-thief's hand.
فَمَنso who ليfor me بِأَرضٍwith a land رَحبَةٍspacious لاnot يَحِلُّهاdwells in it
سِوايَother than me تُضاهِيَresembles دارَةَthe metrical circle of المُتَقارِبِthe Mutaqarib metre
So who can find me a spacious land where none dwells
but me, resembling the metrical circle of Mutaqarib?
فَماso nothing لِلفَتىfor a man إِلّاexcept اِنفِرادٌseclusion وَوَحدَةٌand solitude
إِذاwhen هُوَhe لَمnot يُرزَقis granted بُلوغَattainment of المَآرِبِdesires
So a man has nothing but seclusion and solitude
when he is not granted the fulfillment of his desires.
فَحارِبso wage war وَسالِمand make peace إِنif أَرَدتَyou wish فَإِنَّماfor ... is only
أَخوa man of السِلمِpeace فيin الأَيّامِthe days مِثلُlike مُحارِبِa warrior
So wage war and make peace if you wish, for
the man of peace, as days pass, is just like a warrior.
